Why You May Be Resisting A Regular Guidance Practice

The importance of spiritual self-care

You probably already know you should have a regular routine of spiritual self-care, but maybe it's a little more ad hoc, if not totally non-existent. Maybe you’re not sure what activities to include in your spiritual self-care practice, or maybe you don’t have time for self-care, or maybe you’ve even tried a few self-care activities but haven’t had the kind of results or benefits you were expecting.

I believe at the heart of a spiritual self-care practice is the ability to deeply connect with yourself, your intuition and your Spiritual Support Team, or your team of spirit guides. I’ve taught thousands of people how to reconnect with their intuition and SST, by creating a regular routine to slow down and tune in —and, I’ve seen many reasons why people may find it difficult to commit to their own spiritual self-care.

Finding it hard to commit to self-care?

I'm going to guess that you *know* there are things you could be doing to help you on your intuitive or spiritual journey...

We know we should meditate.

We know we should reflect and tune into our own guidance.

We know we should create moments of stillness, space and silence.

But, we also know it can be difficult to keep at it consistently. (For me too!!)

Just because we logically, or intuitively, know we should be doing something that it is beneficial to and for us, doesn't mean we always act on it. And in that resistance and avoidance is a massive clue — if you're willing to look at it.

Five reasons you may be avoiding spiritual self-care

Here, we'll explore some of the top reasons you might be avoiding a regular guidance practice and/or a committed routine of spiritual self-care, and what to do about it.

  1. Fear of Losing Control: Our head, or logical mind, often resists relinquishing control to our intuitive, knowing side. So, as we begin a self-care routine, particularly when we incorporate our intuition and higher guidance, our mind may start to worry it will lose control. Our mind can also tell us this kind of practice is “wasting time” or “not very productive”, because it wants to think its way out of a problem it has also like led you into.

Your mind is useful, but it doesn't have all the answers. To address this, balance your head and heart by allowing your heart to set the destination and tasking your mind with specific actions.

  2. Fear of Discovering Uncomfortable Truths: Resistance of a regular spiritual practice could stem from an underlying fear of what you’ll uncover during your practice. As a professional psychic, I’ve had many a conversation with people about people afraid of what they may learn or find out, especially from our SST.

Remember, you have free will and choice. You don’t have to act on every insight immediately or at all. Your guidance practice can help you prepare for action when you’re ready.

  3. Fear of Necessary Changes: You may avoid a guidance practice or spiritual self-care because you fear the changes you already know on a deeper level that you need to make. If we were to receive higher guidance that confirmed something we were hoping we could avoid, we would be challenged by the idea we might actually need to do something about it.

By acknowledging these changes, whether we are pleased by them or not, means you can also begin to address them step-by-step, working through resistance and fears as you go.

  4. Fear of the Future: Just like the avoidance of a spiritual practice for fear of what you might discover, you may also be fearful of the unknown. I get it, to our logical mind, the unknown can be intimidating. However, a guidance practice can help you build trust and resilience, preparing you for whatever comes your way. The practice itself is a tool for navigating potential futures, to help you become more accepting of all the possibilities.

  5. Fear of Higher Guidance: Working with spiritual guides can be daunting due to past experiences and/or cultural or spiritual beliefs. If this is a concern, focus instead on your intuition and inner wisdom. You don’t need to engage with higher beings if it doesn't feel right for you.

How to overcome avoidance of self-care practices

If you’re experiencing resistance, or you fall out of a regular practice, ask your heart (or deep intuitive True Self) if it wants a regular guidance practice. Place your hand on your heart, breathe deeply, and listen to its response. Your body’s reactions can provide clarity on whether a guidance practice is beneficial for you.

Consider examining old beliefs and stories that contribute to your resistance. Reflect on whether these beliefs are true and if they can be reframed to support your practice.

Finally, you might like to consider joining a community where you embark on the practice with others, so you mitigate the fears and find accountability in your practice.
