Am I living my purpose? (Yes, you already are!)
Living on Purpose: What Does it Really Mean?
What does it really mean to be living on purpose? Can everyone achieve this? Or is it just some lofty goal that only a few will truly reach? You are living out your purpose, even if it doesn't feel like it. That’s because there are four stages to living on purpose and all of them are purposeful, even if you don't yet realise it.
To explore this concept of living on purpose or living out our purpose, we may first need to start with what does living on purpose actually mean? There's a distinction that I think is really important, and that is our purpose is not the same thing as our career. We can make them the same thing eventually, but in my work they're not the same thing. I also believe that we have a moment-to-moment purpose, and so in each and every moment, there is something that we're called to be, to do and to share.
What is my purpose?
Our purpose is to be consistently present in the immediate moment. In each and every moment, we are asked to be present where we are with who we are with, and to offer whatever it is we have to offer. I call this our moment-to-moment purpose. Over time, as these moments add up, a bigger theme emerges.
Maybe you're in a particular moment in your life where you're called to be present with your children, or maybe you're in a phase of your life where you're empty nesting and your focus, your purpose, your reason for being is shifting and changing. When we are present in each and every moment, we will notice when the calling of the time (or moment) changes —we are needing to be present in a new moment, or to a new situation or a new person.
We each, then, have on one level the same purpose. To be fully present and offer the fullness of our True Self in that moment. When we live our entire life this way, it means by the time we reach the end of our lives, an overarching purpose is going to emerge.
“At the core, we all have the same simplistic purpose: to reconnect to our essence and then live from it. ”
Despite the same moment-to-moment purpose, we will all reveal a very different overarching purpose. We're each going to bring a very unique flavour to each moment, based on the unique gifts, talents, ideas, love, compassion etc we may have to share in any given moment. While we have the same moment-to-moment purpose, our experience of it will be heavily influenced by our life's purpose, which is going to be revealed throughout that sort of overarching accumulation of all of our present offerings and it can be influenced by our soul's purpose.
Life's Purpose vs. Soul's Purpose
There is a distinction between our life purpose and our soul purpose. In my first book, You Already Know, I do go a little deeper into these distinctions, but I want to really briefly touch on it here.
Life's purpose is about remembering who we are, why we're here, and expressing that unique soul assignment in this lifetime. It's where that individual flavour comes in. All of the experiences we're having in this particular lifetime are influencing and shaping how our soul's purpose is going to be expressed and explored in this lifetime. Now our soul's purpose is unique to our soul and our soul is that part of us which has incarnated a lifetime after lifetime after lifetime.
If I use myself as the example, in this lifetime as Helen Jacobs, my life's purpose is to bring this work forward in a way that makes sense to me. At a very human level, I love writing, I love teaching, I love sharing and working with people, and so of course you can see how that's come together in the work that I do. Meanwhile, my soul's purpose I believe there are multiple layers to it, but it's really been about this connection to spirit. It's been about expression and voice. And so that soul purpose has been reoccurring across many lifetimes. I have experienced clairvoyantly many of those lifetimes where my soul has also explored this spirituality, my connection with spirit and my ability to express.
What about my path and purpose?
As we improve and increase our ability to be fully present in each and every moment-to-moment —showing up with who we are and what we have in that moment —we will see a pathway emerge. As we open to our moment-to-moment purpose, and begin to reveal our overarching purpose, we may also get a sense of our life’s purpose and underpinning soul purpose.
Even if we can’t intellectually see all of this at once, we can trust that who we are is enough. What we are doing is enough. And when we show up more often than not as the most full, true version of ourselves, we are always living our path and purpose. We may just need to come back into deeper connection with our true self, in order to remember our life’s and soul’s path and purpose.
